Winter iPhone Roundup

It’s been a busy Winter for Do Tank Studios so far, with lots of very exciting projects in production that we will be able to unveil in 2010.

We’ve been very busy looking at mobile strategies and application development recently, with a few iPhone & iPod Touch applications having recently gone live on the App Store, so here’s a quick roundup.

Pilot is a fun application that turns your iPhone into your very own motion responsive WWII fighter plane for taking out annoying friends, colleagues and pets. Good childish fun.

Lifelines is an iPhone “soundboard” app that lets you play inspirational and seminal speeches from key figures in history. It also connects with Wikipedia, providing background information on each person, their lives and their impact on the world. It has been our pleasure to work with the incredibly talented Alex Mayhew on this project.

Bird Song FM came out of the Do Tank R&D Lab as a collaboration between Adam Hoyle & Julian Baker and builds on previous collaboration that paid tribute to the recordings of Bird Song that played out as a test transmission on early DAB stations. Now available for the iPhone to provide a perfect space to eacape and relax into, even when on the go. To ensure that the soundtrack is always unique we’ve developed a special generative audio sequencer which remixes the individual bird sounds in exciting and unexpected ways.

PhotoFit for iPhone

We are very pleased to announce that our very first (of a series) of iPhone apps is now available in the iTunes App Store.

PhotoFit is a fun app that allows you to take pictures of your friends and colleagues and mix them together with hilarious outcomes. You can then save the images to your library or email them to other iPhone users.

The Moon The Moon

The Moon The Moon is a sweet little piece of on-line theatre that we’ve produced in partnership with Coney, Unlimited Theatre and Solar Associates to promote Unlimited’s new theatre production which is starting at the Curve Theatre in Leicester, and then touring around the UK.

We’ve had some really nice feedback about the interactive on Twitter, and also Chris Wilkinson at the Guardian has written a really nice review of it.

BBC Flash Integration Policy

Do Tank Studios are working with the BBC to define their best-practice guidelines for all Adobe Flash projects.

Until now, the BBC has not had detailed site-wide guidelines for Flash driven projects but with increasing adoption and integration of the Flash platform, Do Tank were commissioned to redefine how the BBC manage their Flash deliverable from independents and 3rd party vendors. We will examine how the TPMs, the producers for the various streams of flash integration, designers and Flash Developers manage the existing flash built deliverables. Do Tank Studios will report, examine, determine and feedback improved methods of Flash Integration for future Flash built projects.

The Sancho Plan @ Ars Electronica

For the third year running, Ars Electronica have invited The Sancho Plan to exhibit a piece of work at their innovative museum space in Linz, Austria. Once again, The Sancho Plan have chosen to partner with Do Tank Studios to produce another groundbreaking interactive experience.

This year is slightly different, as The Sancho Plan are the only group to have been invited to produce content for the brand new museum, which opens early in 2009, so it’s a real honour.

Adam is on his way out there today to spend a few days calibrating and configuring the system, so we’ll update this post when he returns with some pictures and more information.

Sheffield DocFest RFID Game

This year’s Sheffield DocFest featured an unusual way for attendees to experience the event: an RFID Game. We were asked by pervasive gaming specialists, Coney, to develop the branding and design of various elements the game including the RFID Cards themselves which allowed players to battle and earn points which they could then exchange for beer. Any game that involves beer is a winner in my book.

London Games Festival 2008

As part of the London Games Festival Fringe 2008, Adam Hoyle, one of the Do Tank crew, will be appearing with Julian Baker to unveil a new sonic artwork at Cybersonica Social. The night also contains DJs, VJs, a performance controlled live from Mexico and an 8 bit chip music set, so should be a night to remember.

Warriors come out to play

Cult seventies classic The Warriors is to get a comic book adaptation, courtesy of the creative talents of writer David Atchison, artist Chris Dibari, and Kieran Oats as colourist. The 1979 film was based on Sol Yurick’s novel and follows the story of the titular street-gangs journey when they get stuck in Bronx, 27 miles out of their territory, and have to make their way back through other to Coney Island.
